The Oakeys men's league competition has been an active part of the club's bowling activity and has helped to motivate play between the members on a Monday evening. We now have 9 teams entered with an average of 5 players per team with 3 players representing their team each Monday. The teams have been given names that are closely related to the Winchmore Hill area and here is a brief summary of the history of the team names:
1.
GRACE - Known affectionally as "W.G." (1848-1915) generally recognised as the greatest cricketer of all time, the Doctor represented hiscountry and his county, Gloucestershire, for many years. "W.G." visited this area several times and played on the Walker and Roseneath grounds.
2.
MANN - The famous cricketing family over many generations with strong local connections. F.G. Mann was a fine captain of his county, Middlesex, in the post war years and also captained England on their tour to South Africa.
3.
PAULIN - A famous local family who originally lived in "Beaulieu" and then moved to "Broadfields", just off Wades Hill. Sir William Paulin was married to Fanny Mann and they were known as "Lord and Lady Bountiful of Winchmore Hill", due to their gererosity and many kindnesses to the villagers.
4.
PAVILION - Or should we say the Clubhouse - the 19th hole in golfing parlence, where we can all reflect over a pint, on the more happy hours spent on the bowling green.
5.
RADCLIFFE - The road in which the Club is located. Named after Doctor Samuel Radcliffe (1580 - 1648). Principal of Brasenose College, Oxford, who built a school at Steeple Aston in the early 1630's. He owned land in these parts and donated most of the rents to augment his school's income.
6.
ROSENEATH - The Roseneath estate was located just off Vicars Moor Lane and it was the home of the Mann family, famous in the world of cricket. Thomas Mann established the Winchmore Hill Village Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club and the wicket itself was adjacent to our prent bowling green. The house was demolished in 1936.
7.
SHRUBBERY - The house called "The Shrubbery", from which the "Gardens" take their name, was located in the Green Lanes near the Green Dragon and can still be identified today behind the shop fronts of a Chemist and Chinese Restaurant.
